What are the different types of EV chargers? You can choose from a standard socket (not recommended), a tethered EV charger or a socketed EV charger. There are many reasons for choosing an EV charge point over a standard socket. EV charge points are designed specifically for charging electric vehicles and provide a faster, easier and more economic solution. Standard sockets are not designed for charging electric vehicles. Standard sockets are not suited to the amount of power and time required to charge EV vehicles on a regular basis. Often, outdoor sockets are not placed conveniently and extension reels should not be used due to over heating risks.
Tethered Car Charger
Tethered charge points are fitted with a long cable and connector. These types of charge points are quick and convenient to use.
Tethered points come with either a type 1 or type 2 connection. The required connection types must be checked before selecting a tethered charge point, as not all electric vehicles have a type 1 or type 2 connection. Most electric vehicles made in the united kingdom carry a type 2 connection.
Non Tethered EV Charger
Socketed charge points are not fitted with a specific cable or connector. These type of charge points are compatible with any electric vehicle.
Socketed points come with all of the advantages of a tethered charging point. However, you are not limited to a type 1 or type 2 connection.
