Smart Solar & Battery Installation in Gloucester

by | Feb 24, 2026

Client: Residential homeowner, Chervil Close, Gloucester

At a detached two-storey family home in Chervil Close, Gloucester, the homeowner had recently taken a significant step toward a greener future with the purchase of an electric vehicle (EV). With annual electricity consumption of approximately 5,000 kWh, rising energy costs, and the addition of an EV charger, the household sought a smarter, more sustainable energy solution.

Their goal was clear: reduce annual electricity bills, maximise self-sufficiency, ensure compatibility with their EV charger, and gain protection against power cuts.

The Requirement

The customer required a comprehensive solar solution that would:

  • Reduce rising annual electricity costs
  • Support and complement a recently installed EV charger
  • Provide battery storage for evening and low-sunlight use
  • Offer protection during grid power cuts
  • Maximise export returns for excess energy generated

With energy independence and long-term savings in mind, the system needed to be efficient, future-proof, and robust.

The Solution

To meet these requirements, we designed and installed a high-performance 8.1 kWp solar PV system, paired with substantial battery storage and intelligent power management.

The installation included 18 x 450W DMEGC solar panels, delivering excellent efficiency and reliability. The panels were fitted with optimisers to ensure maximum generation performance, even in variable shading conditions.

Energy storage was provided by an 18 kWh SigEnergy battery system, enabling the household to store surplus solar energy generated during the day for use overnight or during peak tariff periods. A SigEnergy 5 kW inverter manages the system’s performance and energy flow.

To provide resilience, a Gateway backup system was installed, ensuring continued power supply to essential circuits during grid outages — delivering true peace of mind.

The system was completed in just two days, with minimal disruption to the household.

Installation Fact File

  • Property Type: Detached 2-storey family home
  • Location: Gloucester
  • Solar Panels: 18 × 450W DMEGC
  • System Size: 8.1 kWp
  • Inverter: SigEnergy 5 kW
  • Battery Storage: 18 kWh SigEnergy
  • Estimated Annual Generation: 6,406 kWh
  • Annual CO₂ Savings: 2 tonnes
  • Grid Independence: 78%
  • Estimated Annual Savings: £1,674
  • Estimated ROI: 8 years
  • Project Duration: 2 days
  • Additional Features:
    • Power-cut protection via Gateway
    • Optimisers on all panels
    • EV charger compatibility

Performance & Financial Impact

The 8.1 kWp system is expected to generate approximately 6,406 kWh per year, exceeding the home’s previous annual electricity usage. This enables substantial self-consumption while exporting surplus energy back to the grid.

With 78% energy independence, the household significantly reduces reliance on grid electricity. The estimated annual savings of £1,674 result in a projected return on investment of around 8 years, after which the system will continue generating free electricity for decades.

In addition to financial benefits, the system reduces carbon emissions by an estimated 1.4 tonnes of CO₂ annually, supporting the homeowner’s commitment to sustainability.

Conclusion

This Gloucester installation demonstrates how a carefully designed solar and battery system can transform a modern family home into a highly efficient, future-ready energy hub.

By integrating solar generation, battery storage, EV charging compatibility, and power-cut protection, the homeowner now benefits from:

  • Lower energy bills
  • Greater energy independence
  • Protection against outages
  • Reduced carbon footprint
  • Long-term financial return

As electric vehicles become increasingly common, integrated solar and storage solutions like this are no longer a luxury — they are a smart, strategic investment in energy security and sustainability.
